I really like this brush it’s an airbrush tool with a noise filter, giving the brush a more scattered, rough appearance, which more closely imitates a real airbrush in my opinion. It’s a nice, textured pen with less size variation, nice for emulating traditional, intentionally-messy line work and lettering. This pen seems to be trying to emulate a ball-point pen, and I can see where they’re coming from, but I get more of a pencil-like impression from it, but harder than their other pencil brushes. This means that you can achieve some nice blending while retaining thick, hard edges and minimizing feathering - so it does a pretty good job of emulating traditional colour markers. This is a chisel-point marker-style brush with opacity sensitivity, meaning that the harder you press, the more opaque your colour is. Those are some basic brushes with many different applications here are some more specific/niche brushes that I like to use You can quickly toggle between a normal brush & an eraser brush using the same key! While there are several brushes that function only as erasers, every brush you use can also be toggled to erase instead of make marks, so I don’t really have any recommendations for a specific eraser. If you want a more textured, scattered, less “perfect” airbrush tool that is more like a real airbrush, try out Airbrush_linear_noisy (below). This brush has no opacity, though, so if you want something to emulate colouring markers like Copics or Prismacolor, try Block_tilt (below).Ī standard, digital-style airbrush tool. It can make for really strong, bold outlines, can work well for blocky but impressive sketches if you scale it down, and of course, it’s perfect for thick, bold lettering. Impact! This brush does a great job of emulating thick, chisel-point markers like Sharpies or Textas. If you find this brush is too hard/pixellated/”crunchy”, try Ink_brush_25 (above). I find this brush a little too pixellated for frequent use, but it’s very good for its purpose - to emulate more traditional nib-style inking pens, for fine line art or for lettering. Experiment with its other pencil-style brushes if you want to try and emulate coloured pencil illustrations. Pencil_2B is an all-rounder that’s good for sketches and line work, and can be built up nicely like a real pencil. Krita has a lot of pencil-style brushes, and the majority of them are very impressive and versatile. A great pen for sketching and for fine details, especially in manga-style art. No opacity or size sensitivity it just makes smooth, fluid, very fine & uniform-width lines. If you find this brush is too soft/fuzzy, try Ink_brush_25 (above) or Ink_tilt_20 (below).Īn extremely simple brush that I absolutely love. It’s similar to a thicker, high-quality rollerball ink pen. I find it a little pixellated and it has fewer applications than other brushes, but still very handy if you’re struggling for a good balance between “fine” and “expressive”. This brush is kind of in-between a fine liner and a fine paint brush. It produces very smooth lines without pixellation. This is a favourite of mine! It’s good for thicker & more expressive line art with a smaller size range than other brushes (meaning the size of your brush strokes will vary less wildly with more pressure compared to other brushes). Great for filling in blocks of colour or thick, fluid digital lineart. It has good opacity & size pressure sensitivity, and it’s a general all-rounder tool for very digital, opaque brush strokes.Īnother standard digital brush, but without opacity pressure sensitivity and with a bigger scale to work with.
It doesn’t really have a traditional look to it at all. Some of them are versatile, basic brushes that could be a good place to start exploring the program, and others are brushes I think are particularly unique or useful, for people who aren’t new to digital art. The number may seem a little daunting, though, and some brushes have very specific applications so I compiled a list of my favourites. Krita comes with a huge number of brushes - brushes that are actually useful for drawing & painting. If you have experience with other digital painting programs, then the learning curve, in my opinion, is not very steep, and the UI is intuitive enough to grasp if you are new to digital art.

I was writing this up for a friend and thought it might be useful for other people who are looking for a free digital art program alternative to Photoshop, especially one which can run on a Linux OS.
